We talk a lot about motivation, purpose, and engagement.
But sometimes the real question is whether we are missing the actual issue.
That became very clear in this conversation with Dr. Kurt Durnwalder: a lack of engagement is often less a motivation problem than a structural one. When people are expected to take responsibility but are not really able to make decisions, even the best mission starts to lose its impact in day-to-day work.
What makes this conversation especially relevant is that Kurt Durnwalder does not focus only on individual leaders or personal capabilities. He talks about how organizations as systems build the capacity to act: through clarity, sound decision-making principles, and structures that make real impact possible. That is exactly why this topic fits so well with Empowerment Day, where we look at empowerment on three levels: individual, team, and organization.
It is a strong reminder that empowerment does not simply mean motivating people more. It also means creating conditions in which responsibility, decision-making, and impact are aligned. And honestly, that is often more uncomfortable than introducing a new mission statement. But it is probably far more effective.
