25 years ago, Myth of Motivation was a wake-up call for management – but what remains of it today? And what does motivation look like in 2025?
Incentives, bonuses, motivation programmes – many companies invest heavily in what they believe are the “right” levers. But do they actually work? Unfortunately, current figures reveal major issues: according to the Gallup Engagement Index Germany 2024, only around 9% of employees feel highly emotionally committed to their employer, while 78% are simply doing the bare minimum. This lack of engagement costs German companies up to €134 billion each year. The latest EY study also confirms a continuing decline in employee motivation across German organisations.
In his bestselling book Myth of Motivation, Reinhard K. Sprenger challenged what was considered standard practice more than 25 years ago – and what is still widespread in many organisations today. His core thesis: all forms of motivation are actually demotivating.
But what still holds true today? What has changed? And what is needed instead?
